Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

TAMPA, FL - With a 52-minute rain delay complicating the proceedings and knocking both starters out of the game, the Tampa Yankees survived to defeat the Charlotte Stone Crabs 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Both starting pitchers took to the mound under overcast skies and dominated. Henry Centeno, making his second-ever start for the Stone Crabs, tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two walks in the first before retiring the final seven men to face him. Chance Adams was just as good for Tampa, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.

However, Mother Nature had other plans for Centeno and Adams. A downpour erupted in the middle of the fourth, sending the players back to the clubhouse for 52 minutes. By the time the game resumed, both hurlers had rested too long to continue.

It was the Yankees who first took advantage. With Ian Gibaut throwing his third inning of the game, top New York prospect Jorge Mateo singled to center and stole second leading off the sixth. Mateo advanced to third on a Miguel Andujar fly ball and scored two batters later on a Thairo Estrada single, making it 1-0 Tampa.

Charlotte struck back in the top of the eighth against new pitcher Travis Hissong. Grant Kay doubled to right with one out, and Thomas Milone immediately followed with a two-bagger to left-center to score Kay and knot things up at one run apiece.

Estrada wasn't done yet, though. With one out and the bases loaded against Edwin Fierro in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees third baseman stroked a single past the middle of the diamond to score two runs and make it 3-1. The Stone Crabs put runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth, but only scored one run.

The series wraps up on Monday night at 7:00 in Tampa, though heavy rain from Tropical Storm Colin is in the forecast.
