Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (April 24, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle were in control for 26 outs of the ballgame on Monday night at Knology Park. Unfortunately, it takes 27 to win a ballgame and while they were one strike away from winning on more than one occasion, they couldn't get the final out as Blue Jay catcher John Schneider hit a walk off grand slam and the Miracle lost 5-4.
The ninth began with Julio DePaula getting the number two and three hitters in the Blue Jay order, Ryan Patterson and Ron Davenport, on ground outs. That's when everything unraveled. DePaula walked Eric Nielsen on four pitches. Robinson Diaz singled to right. Dustin Majewski hit a slow chopper to short than Trevor Plouffe bobbled and dropped for an error, to load the bases. Then Schneider hit a 2-0 pitched over the left-center field wall for his first homer of the season and just his 14th in his five year career. DePaula was unhittable prior to that, pitching the seventh and eighth and allowing just one hit in those two innings.
The Miracle wasted another superb outing by Kevin Slowey, who has an ERA of right around two and still doesn't have a decision in four starts. He was perfect through 3.1 innings before walking Patterson with one out in the fourth. He didn't give up his first hit until a double to lead off the fifth by Diaz, who scored on a one out single by Schneider. Slowey went 6.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out six.
The Miracle were in control all game long. They took a 2-0 lead in the first when Alexi Casilla led off the game with an infield single to first. Deacon Burns followed with an infield single to short. The two moved up on a wild pitch and Casilla scored on Plouffe's infield single to third. Garrett Guzman followed with a single to right to drive home Burns.
In the fifth the Miracle made it 3-0 when Casilla reached on Davenports fielding error, moved to third on Burns' single and scored on a wild pitch. The Miracle looked like they got an big insurance run in the ninth when Kory Feiner singled to left center with one out. He moved to second on Johnny Woodard's ground out and scored on Luke Hughes' RBI double to right-center.
The Miracle take Tuesday off and head to BrightHouse Networks Field on Wednesday for an 11:35 a.m. start against the Clearwater Threshers in the first of a three game series. The Miracle will send LHP Kyle Aselton (0-2, 1.72) to the hill.
