(Vero Beach, FL) - Three Vero Beach pitchers combined to hold Palm Beach to one run and four hits as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals 5-1 Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Travis Denker contributed two separate run-scoring singles to help the Dodgers snap the Cards 5-game winning streak. The rubber match of the series is set for Tuesday night at 6:35 PM.

Scott Elbert started for the Dodgers and turned in his fourth straight impressive outing. A high pitch count held him to four innings, but he allowed just three hits and one run while striking out five. The lone run scored in the first inning when Sean Danielson led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a base hit by Terry Evans. Elbert then allowed only one infield single over the next three frames.

Zach Hammes entered in the fifth and dominated. He allowed just two baserunners in four innings - one an error and the other on a 2-out single by Danielson in the seventh inning. He struck out three and earned the win for his first decision of the season. Wesley Wright pitched a perfect 9th to close out the Dodgers fourth win over the last seven games.

Trailing 1-0 early, the Dodgers tied it up in the third. Jamie Hoffman doubled with two outs and scored on a base hit from David Nicholson. Vero took the lead the next inning when Xavier Paul reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Denker's first RBI single brought him in for a 2-1 advantage.

The Cardinals let it slip away in the fifth. Nicholson greeted reliever Tyler Adamczyk with a double. The pithcer then threw away a bunt from Ryan Russ that allowed Nicholson to score. Blake DeWitt walked and Pat Borders reached on an error that brought home Russ. Chris Westervelt then drew a free pass to load the bases and one out later Denker delivered his second RBI single to make it 5-1, the final score.

Prior to Monday's game, the Dodgers had scored a total of one run in Elbert's first three starts. The left-hander has now pitched 19 innings, allowing only four runs on 14 hits and eight walks with 18 strikeouts.
