Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
ST. LUCIE, FL (May 7, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle knew Sunday evenings game against the St. Lucie Mets was going to be tough. After John Thomas, who was scheduled to be Sundays starter, was called up to Double-on Saturday evening, the Miracle were left with a bullpen by committee. The Mets knocked around four Miracle pitchers for 14 hits in a 9-6 loss for the Miracle at Tradition Field.
Jose Mijares got the spot start but ran into trouble early on. After getting out of the first inning unscathed, the Mets got a run in the second on a solo homer from Jose Flores, his third of the season.
The Miracle tied it in the top of the third when Kyle Geiger led off the inning with a single to right-center and scored on Alexi Casilla's RBI triple. The game got away from the Miracle after that.
The Mets scored three in the third on a sacrifice fly from Ambiorix Concepcion and a two run homer from Shawn Bowman, his first of the season. Mijares went 2.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Miracle relievers didn't fare much better and were unable to keep them in the ballgame. The Mets scored at least a run from the second inning through the seventh. Ryan Callahan went 2.2 innings giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out four while Tim Lahey went 2.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out one. The only Miracle pitcher who didn't give up a run was Chris Schutt who pitched a scoreless eighth.
The Miracle got to within 5-2 in the fifth when Trevor Plouffe led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Geiger. The Miracle then loaded the bases, but with two outs Garrett Guzman grounded out to end the inning.
The Miracle loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, trailing 9-3, but managed just one run on Guzman's RBI fielders choice.
The Miracle made it interesting in the ninth when Matt Tolbert led off with a single to left. With one out Brock Peterson singled to left. Jeremy Pickrel doubled home Tolbert. Plouffe walked to load the bases and Geiger followed with a walk to force home a run and make it 9-5. With the bases loaded and one out the Mets called on the saves leader in the FSL, Carlos Muniz. He got Johnny Woodard to ground into a fielders choice, which scored a run, and Justin Arneson ended the game with a ground out.
The same two teams meet Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Matt Garza (4-0, 0.86) to the hill while the Mets are TBA.
