Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Blake DeWitt hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th, but the Dunedin Blue Jays held on for a 5-3 win at Holman Stadium Sunday afternoon. Blake Johnson retired the first 13 batters of the game for Vero Beach, but took the tough loss. The series continues Monday night at 7:00 PM. Free tickets are available at various locations in the Indian River Mall.
Johnson was perfect through four innings and retired the first batter in the fifth. Dustin Majewski became the first baserunner when he grounded a single over the pitcher's mound and into center field. Aaron Matthews followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Christian Snavely grouded a ball to third base and Majewski was thrown out at home. Then with two outs, Ryan Klosterman hit another grounder to third that looked as if it would end the inning, but DeWitt was late covering second base for the force play and everyone was safe. Juan Peralta then laced a single on the next pitch that scored two and put the Jays ahead 2-1.
Klosterman doubled in Matthews in the 7th inning to make it 3-1 and cap the scoring off Johnson. The Dodger right-hander worked through the seventh for the second time this year - the only Vero Beach starter who has done so. Dunedin plated two runs with two outs in the ninth to make it 5-1.
DeWitt's homer scored the only for Vero Beach since the 3rd inning. In that frame, Chris Westervelt hit a sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded to score what was at the time the lead run. The Dodgers left the bases loaded in the 5th and in total stranded six runners in scoring position.
