Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
CLEARWATER, FL (June 23, 2005) - The second half of the season began with a thrilling come from behind victory for the Fort Myers Miracle as they defeated the Clearwater Threshers 3-2 Thursday night at Bright House Networks Field.
The Miracle were blanked for seven innings and trailed 1-0 in the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out when Trent Oeltjen reached on first baseman Bryan Hansen's fielding error. Scott Whitrock followed with a double that moved Oeltjen to third and Kyle Phillips was intentionally walked. Matt Moses then pinch hit and after fouling off five straight 3-2 pitches, took a pitch out of the zone to walk and force in a run. Brock Peterson then fouled out to shallow right and Whitrock was thrown out trying to tag up.
The Threshers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Jake Blalock hit a two out single to right off of Jay Sawatski that scored BJ Littleton. The Miracle, however, answered right back in the ninth.
Matt Tolbert reached on a fielding error by second baseman Tim Moss with one out. On a 3-2 pitch to Ron Perodin, Whitrock took off for second. Perodin swung and missed, but Whitrock was safe at second. With the Miracle down to their final out JR Taylor tripled to right-center to drive home Whitrock. Oeltjen followed with a double off the wall in right to score Taylor and give the Miracle their first lead of the night.
Sawatski closed out the bottom of the ninth. After giving up a lead off single and a sac bunt he got the final two guys to strike out.
Miracle starter Adam Harben was strong going seven innings allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Thresher starter Clary Carlsen was even better going 6.2 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking five and striking out two.
The same two teams meet Friday night at Bright House Networks Field. The Miracle send RHP Nick Blackurn (5-4, 3.82) to the hill against Thresher RHP Zach Segovia (1-9, 6.72).
