Daytona Tortugas News Release

JUPITER, Fla-The page has now been officially turned to Chapter Two of the Daytona Cubs 2005 story, and the opening sentence of their new chapter began on Wednesday night with the same storyline as Chapter One...with a victory.

In the rubber match of a three-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals, the Cubs relied on solid starting pitching from struggling right-hander Anderson Tavarez (3-5), and a few clutch homers from second baseman Enrique Cruz and right fielder J.J. Johnson, as Daytona held off a late Cardinal rally and hung on to win by a final of 7-4.

Tavarez pitched six full innings and surrendered just two earned runs on four hits, as the righty struck out four to record his third win of the season.

Cruz also added his best game as a Daytona Cub, logging a 2-for-3 performance with a two-run homerun and two RBI's, to lead the Cubs offensive attack at the plate.

Cardinals lefty Buddy Blair (2-2) got the start, and was tagged for five earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the loss.

Palm Beach did stage a late rally scoring a run in each of the last two frames, but righty Nate Sevier struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to stop the bleeding and preserve the win.

The game lasted a shade over three hours, after a nine-minute delay halted the action in the bottom half of the seventh inning caused by a power outage that shut off the stadium lights.

With the win, the Daytona Cubs are now an unblemished 1-0 in the second half, and the Cardinals drop to 0-1. Daytona won the three game series 2-1 and has also taken a demanding 10-2 series lead over the Cardinals in 2005.

The Cubs will now head back to Jackie Robinson Ballpark to prepare for a six-game homestand beginning on Thursday with a three-game set against the St. Lucie Mets.

First pitch of Game One between the Cubs and Mets is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
