FORT MYERS, FL (July 31, 2005) - The Fort Myers Miracle had a chance to make a statement during their nine game homestand. They made one, but it wasn't positive. The Miracle lost 7-4 to the Daytona Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium to finish the homestand 3-6.

The Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo homer from Issmael Salas, his sixth of the season. The Miracle tied it in the bottom of the inning without the aid of a hit. The Miracle loaded the bases on a hit batsman and two walks. Trent Oeltjen was plunked with the bases loaded and one out to force home a run and tie the game at one.

In the fourth the Cubs took a 2-1 lead. Scott Moore led off with an infield single. One out later JJ Johnson singled to right. After about a half hour rain delay, Scott Moore took off towards third. Jones had him picked off, but his fake throw towards second slipped out of his hands and allowed Moore to reach third. Jake Fox' infield single scored Moore.

The Cubs made it 5-1 with a three run sixth. Brian Dopirak hit a solo homer, his 12th of the season, to lead off the inning. Johnson then singled off the foot of Jones and Fox doubled him to third. With one out Tony Richie singled home Dopirak and Salas' sac fly scored Fox.

The Miracle got one back in the bottom of the sixth on three straight singles with two outs by Angelo Fermin, Mark Zamojc and Ron Perodin, the latter driving in the run.

The Cubs got two runs in the seventh. Julio DePaula hit the lead off batter, Enrique Cruz. Moore singled to right that put runners at first and third. DePaula's pick off attempt at first went awry and it allowed Cruz to score and moved Moore to third. He scored on an RBI single by Rojas.

The Miracle scored two in the eighth. With one out Perodin reached on an error. Matt Tolbert walked to put runners at first and second. Luke Hughes singled to right and right fielder Johnson had the ball roll under his glove and go to the wall which allowed two runs to score, but the Miracle would get no closer.

Jones went six innings for the Miiracle and allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out two. Fermin was 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Miracle get Monday off and head to Roger Dean Stadium to take on the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (0-2, 5.60) to the hill.
