VB Dodgers take third straight over Tigers

July 31, 2005 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Mark Alexander struck out the final five batters he faced to preserve a 4-3 Dodgers win over the Lakeland Tigers. With the victory, Vero Beach took their third straight over the Tiger and improved to 6-2 against them this season. A.J. Ellis had two hits and two RBI for the Dodgers, while Anthony Raglani scored twice. Xavier Paul led off the first inning with a home run to help Vero beat Nate Bumstead (11-3). The Dodgers are off Monday, but return to action in Tampa Tuesday night at 7:05 PM.

Paul's home run in the first gave Vero an early lead. It stayed 1-0 until the fourth when Raglani walked with one out. He stole second and scored on the first hit from Ellis.

Brian Pilkington, meanwhile, controlled the Tigers bats. The lone run he surrendered in 7 innings came in the fifth. Jason Knoedler blooped a single to right field and went to second a wild pitch. He came home when Gilbert Mejia singled to right field.

The Dodgers tried to pull away in the bottom of the sixth. Raglani led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Travis Denker reached on another error one play later to put runners at the corners. Ellis deliverd his second RBI single and Denker eventually scored on Jimmy Rohan's sacrifice fly.

Lakeland had one last gasp in the 8th. Russ Cleveland drew a leadoff walk from reliever Alvis Ojeda. Mejia then reached on an eror that could have been a double play. Back-to-back infield singles by Vince Blue and Brent Clevlen brought home Cleveland and Mejia scored on a fielder's choice. That's when Alexander entered to strike out the last two hitters of the 8th and all three batters in the 9th. His 19th save tied him with the Tigers' Chris Homer for 3rd in the Florida State League.
