JUPITER, FL - Scott Mathieson tossed six shutout innings and Timi Moni-Erigbali hit a two-run homer as the Clearwater Threshers beat the Cardinals 3-1 on Saturday.
Cardinals' starter Eric Haberer did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Brad Correll reached on an infield hit with two outs. The next hitter, Bryan Hansen drove home Correll with a double to make it 1-0.
In the fifth, Zach Norman singled, and Moni-Erigbali hit what looked to be a fly out to right field that kept carrying and landed just over the right field fence near the foul pole.
Haberer (7-4) left the game after six innings and allowed three runs and four hits.
The Cardinals missed a chance to score in the fourth. Ty Parker lofted a fly ball to right with one out and runners on second and third. Reid Gorecki, who was on third, tagged and came home, Evidently thinking there were two outs, the runner on second, Brian Martin, ran on the play and was doubled off before Gorecki could reach the plate.
The Cardinals finally broke the shutout in the eighth with an RBI-single by Terry Evans who finished 2-for-2 on the night.
Greg Bauer came on in the ninth for the Threshers to earn his first save of the year.
The Cardinals look to earn a split in the series against the Threshers on Sunday afternoon at 2:05.
