ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 13, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets completed a sweep of the Fort Myers Miracle on Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 win at Tradition Field.
The Mets jumped on Miracle starter Mason Melotakis with three runs in the first inning. Dilson Herrera led off with a base hit, but was forced out on a ground ball by Brandon Nimmo. Melotakis (0-1) then issued walks to T.J. Rivera and Aderlin Rodriguez to load the bases.
On a 1-1 pitch, Gilbert Gomez singled through the left side to bring in Nimmo. Then, Eudy Pina hit a sharp grounder to short, but Jorge Polanco could not make the play and another Mets run scored. Polanco was charged with an error, his fifth of the season. Albert Cordero followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.
Gomez added a solo homer off Melotakis in the third inning and the Mets pushed two more across in the fourth. With runners at first and second, Rodriguez doubled into left field. Maikis De La Cruz scored, then Polanco tried to throw out Rodriguez at second and bounced it in the dirt. Herrera scampered home on Polanco's second error of the game and extended the Mets lead to 6-0.
Mets starter Domingo Tapia held the Miracle hitless in the first five innings with only two walks issued and a pair of strikeouts. Tapia (1-0) gave way to Seth Lugo in the sixth and the Miracle finally got on the scoreboard.
With one out, Polanco singled and Dalton Hicks followed with a walk. After Lugo struck out Adam Brett Walker, Mike Gonzales singled into right center to score Polanco from second. Stuart Turner then hit a one-hopper that went under the mitt of Rodriguez at third base. The error allowed Hicks to score and cut the Mets lead to 6-2.
Randy Fontanez picked up his second save of the series in the ninth. Entering the game with runners on the corners, Fontanez struck out Niko Goodrum to end the game.
The Miracle (6-4) remain on the road and open up a three-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Monday. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. at Charlotte Sports Park.
