Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - When Austin Brice threw his final pitch in the seventh inning with the score tied at zero, it looked like the right hander might get a no decision on an afternoon where he was fantastic on the mound. But luckily for Brice and the Hammerheads, Ryan Goetz' two-run double in the bottom half of the seventh propelled Jupiter to a 6-0 win over Bradenton and gave Brice got a much deserved victory.
In his first outing of the season Brice (2-0) picked up the W after tossing five shutout innings. On Sunday he picked up right where he left off. The Pittsboro, NC native allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings, the longest start of his career. He walked one and struck out five.
After allowing a hit to the second batter of the game Brice retired 12 batters in a row until Jonathan Schwind reached on a walk in the fifth inning.
But even with the outstanding performance Brice still needed the help of his teammates to earn the win and they came through for him in the bottom of the seventh.
Viosergy Rosa reached on an error to start the frame and Matt Juengel followed with a walk. Noah Perio then delivered a perfect sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position and set the stage for Goetz. The Jupiter shortstop delivered when he sliced a double down the line in left that plated both runners.
The Hammerheads would add four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs. Rosa started the rally when he walked and Juengel followed with a single before stealing second. When the second baseman bobbled a grounder off the bat of Blake Barber, Rosa trotted home and the inning continued.
The miscue would be costly for Bradenton as Goetz, Ross Wilson and Perio all delivered RBI singles to make it 6-0.
Joseph O'Gara pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win.
The Hammerheads improved to 4-6 with the victory and they finished the six-game homestand with a record of 3-3. Jupiter will hit the road for six games starting on Monday against St. Lucie.
