PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 13, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Fort Myers Miracle by defeating the Miracle 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tradition Field.
The Mets scored three runs in the first inning and that was plenty of support for Domingo Tapia, who tossed five innings of no-hit ball.
Tapia walked two and struck out two in earning his first win. He was removed after five innings when his pitch count hit 85.
The Mets roughed up Mason Melotakis in the first. Gilbert Gomez lined a sharp single to left to score Brandon Nimmo. Eudy Pina then hit a grounder to the short stop Jorge Polanco who booted the ball, allowing T.J. Rivera to score. Albert Cordero made it 3-0 on a sac fly.
Gomez continued to light up Melotakis, bashing a pitch over the left field wall in the third for his second home run of the year.
The Mets made it 6-0 with two more runs in the fourth. The big hit came on a two-out RBI double by Aderlin Rodriguez.
Seth Lugo gave up a couple of runs in the sixth but struck out Max Keppler to keep it a 6-2 Mets lead.
The Miracle put two runners on with two outs in the ninth, but Randy Fontanez came in and struck out Niko Goodrum to end the game.
The Mets were led at the plate by Dilson Herrera, who went 4 for 5 from the leadoff spot. Nimmo doubled in the sixth. He has hit safely in nine of 10 games.
The Mets (6-4) have now won five straight games. They open a three-game series at Tradition Field against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Kids 12-and-under get in free.
