Minor, 'Cats Snap Four-Game Losing Streak with 6-4 Win over Canaries

Sioux Falls, S.D. - A three-run top of the third and 7.1 innings of two-run baseball from Daniel Minor helped the Gary SouthShore RailCats snap their season-high four-game losing streak after taking down the Sioux Falls Canaries, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon in South Dakota. Sioux Falls (19-27) brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, however, Christian Herstine (1) got David Bergin to groundout to third to end the game for the one-out save. The one-out save was also Herstine's first professional save.
Minor (8-2) earned his fifth straight win and league-best eighth victory after allowing eight hits, no walks and six strikeouts in his league-high 12th start of the year. The second year RailCat has now recorded seven straight quality starts and is 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA during his league-best winning streak.
After scoring four runs in the top of the third on Saturday, Gary (24-23) scored three runs in the top of the third less than 24 hours later on Sunday. Randy Santiesteban got Gary on the board with a two-run double into the left field corner before taking third on the throw to the plate. Santiesteban made it 3-0 after coming home on a Jake Esch wild pitch.
The RailCats increased their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the seventh. Reggie Wilson extended the Gary lead to four with a sacrifice fly before Garrett Copeland delivered the final run of the inning with an RBI single to right.
Sioux Falls got on the scoreboard with two runs in the eighth. Jordan Dean brought home Patrick Fiala on an RBI groundout for the Canaries first run of the game before Bergin scored Dan Motl with a two-out RBI single to center.
Gary added their final run with two outs in top of ninth. Cole Fabio drew a two-out walk before advancing to third on an Alex Crosby single. A Ryan Fritze wild pitch allowed Fabio to score from third for the RailCats final run.
The Canaries trimmed the 'Cats lead to 6-4 on Motl's two-out, two-run home run to left-center in the bottom of the ninth. The homer was Motl's first of the year and the last of his game-high four hits on the afternoon.
Esch (4-3) was charged with his first loss with Sioux Falls and his second against Gary. The former MLB pitcher allowed three runs, on five hits, two walks and struck six batters over six innings.
Gary hosts Texas for a three-game homestand starting on Monday at 7:10 p.m. Lars Liguori (1-4, 3.80) makes his seventh start for the RailCats in the series opener while the AirHogs have yet to announce their starter.
Monday's game is another All You Can Night and MetroPCS Monday. Fans can purchase the AYCE hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts $10 wristbands at the box office before and during the game.
