Minnesota United FC News Release
Minneapolis, Minn. (Thursday, May 15th, 2014) -- Minnesota United FC today announced it will host Barclays Premier League club Swansea City AFC in an historic match at the National Sports Center Stadium Saturday, July 19th.
"To be the first club in Minnesota history to host a match against a team from the Barclays Premier League is a thrill and an honor," said United President Nick Rogers. "To see a team with the stature of Swansea City right here in Minnesota in a venue as intimate as the National Sports Center Stadium is a truly unique opportunity. We look forward to welcoming Swansea City to Minnesota for an exciting and memorable night of football."
The match is part of Swansea City's U.S. preseason tour as they prepare for the 2014-15 Barclay's Premier League season. Swansea will travel to Chicago on July 6th for training camp and will face Chivas Guadalajara of Mexico in Milwaukee on Wednesday, July 16th before facing Minnesota United on July 19th during the Schwan's USA CUP at the National Sports Center Stadium.
"I've heard positive things about Minnesota United FC," said Swansea manager Garry Monk. "They are a great organization with a strong ownership group and are doing exciting things with their club. I know they traveled to England during their preseason, stayed at St. George's Park and faced clubs like Derby County. With Minnesota currently tied for first in the North American Soccer League, we are certainly looking forward to a great challenge against a strong team this summer."
The July 19th match will mark the first time a Premier League club has ever played in Minnesota.
Minnesota United season ticket holders will be eligible to purchase tickets for this event before they go on sale to the general public. Additional details about the presale will be released soon. Minnesota United is also pleased to announce that fans who purchase tickets online through www.MNUnitedFC.com/tickets to either of United's next two home matches will also be eligible to participate in the presale.
Swansea City's tour of the United States has been organized by soccer agency PSC, who has offices in both the UK and the U.S. (www.pscltd.co.uk). PSC organized the Swans' previous U.S. tour to Colorado and San Jose in 2012 as well as U.S. tours for other EPL teams West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Everton in recent years.
Ahead of this historic match, Minnesota United returns home this weekend in a battle of first vs. second as it faces the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at National Sports Center Stadium, May 17th with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. CDT.
