OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Despite a dominating performance in every aspect on the field, Minnesota United was unable to get a win on the road against Rayo OKC. With the loss, Minnesota was eliminated from Spring Championship contention.
The opening 45 minutes were all United, with Rayo seeing only glimpses of the ball. Shots were nearly even, but Minnesota's chances were more menacing. However, the Loons failed to hit the target during the opening half. Rayo managed to get three limp attempts on goal, all easily handled by United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock.
The second half began to open up for Rayo as they pushed back against Minnesota. After snatching at chances early in the game, the home side became more patient and worked the ball into the United box. They were finally were able to break United's defense in the 70th minute with a cross to the far post to Tyler Gibson, who shot across the goal to give Rayo the lead.
The Loons brought on Christian Ramirez late in the second half to spur the offense and try to get a pair of late goals to get a much needed win. Ramirez would give Minnesota its best chances of the game as time wound down. The first came after Stefano Pinho headed down a cross, letting the ball fall for Ramirez who blasted a volley on frame, only to be denied by a spectacular effort from goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes.
Ramirez also poked a slow shot at Fernandes to generate a rebound, but the ball bounced just out of the reach of second half substitute Bernardo Añor.
Rayo stout defense withstood the late surge by Minnesota, securing the first-year club's first win at home.
