Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Despite a valiant effort at the Al Lang Stadium and an early second half equalizer from Carl Haworth, a pair of goals from Georgi Hristov gave the Tampa Bay Rowdies a 2-1 win over Ottawa Fury FC on a hot Saturday night in St. Petersburg.
"We gave everything tonight and it just didn't go our way," said Dalglish. "The guys did everything I asked them to, but sometimes it just doesn't go your way. We played against a top-level Tampa Bay team tonight and they were able to capitalize on their chances, but I'm really proud of the effort our players displayed tonight."
Fury FC dominated the game in midfield play with 55% possession and 84% passing accuracy, but Paul Dalglish's side was unable to carry that control in Tampa Bay's last third as the Rowdies's defense stood tall every time Ottawa tried to bring the ball into the box.
After a goal from Gerogi Hristov in the 20th minute, which gave the Rowdies a 1-0 lead, Carl Haworth brought both teams back to square one when he capitalized on a loose ball after a shot from Mauro Eustaquio and fired the ball past Rowdies keeper Matt Pickens for his second goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Joe Cole sent a through ball to Hristov who beat Romuald Peiser for the second time of the night, giving the Rowdies a 2-1 lead. Fury FC pushed hard in the dying minutes of the game, even sending Rafael Alves in front as a center-forward, but Stuart Campbell's side was able to hold on and grab the three points.
Ottawa now quickly shifts focus towards the Amway Canadian Championship as Fury heads to Vancouver for the away leg of the Semi-Final stage on Wednesday, where they hold a 2-0 lead over Whitecaps FC. The game will be available on TSN2, TSN 1200 and 94,5 Unique FM.
