Minnesota Twins Purchase Contract of Outfielder BJ Boyd
May 27, 2021 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The contract of center fielder BJ Boyd, the Lancaster Barnstormers top hitter during spring training, was purchased by the Minnesota Twins, it was announced Wednesday morning, just prior to the 'Stormers' departure for their first road trip of the season.
Boyd, who was to lead off and start in center for Lancaster Thursday evening in Gastonia, is headed to the Twins' Wichita affiliate in the AA Central League.
Boyd, 27, homered for the Barnstormers during their FanFest game and also had a three-hit game during the spring. The lefty batter reached Class AAA Nashville in 2018 and, after missing the 2019 season, had signed to play with the Barnstormers in 2020, prior to the season being cancelled due to the pandemic.
"We are thrilled to see BJ get another opportunity to get to the big leagues," said manager Ross Peeples. "He has a great story behind him and has had a tremendous spring. He does a lot of things well, and we wish him luck as he continues his career."
The move leaves the Barnstormers with only 23 players heading into the season opener at Gastonia, but Peeples is expecting to make some additions over the next several days. Lancaster had already had the contracts of three starting pitchers purchased within the preceding weeks.
NOTES: Former Kansas City Royals right-hander Heath Fillmyer will get the start for the Barnstormers on Thursday evening against Gastonia right-hander Alexis Candelario. Game time is set for 6:50. NBA legend and LA Dodgers part-owner Earvin "Magic" Johnson is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at CaroMont Health Park.
