MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx will team up with B96 (96.3 KTTB-FM) to host "Juneteenth Night" on Saturday, June 21, when they host the Houston Comets at 7 p.m. CDT. In conjunction with Saturday night's festivities, the Lynx will also take part in the 2008 Twin Cities Juneteenth Celebration and Festival held at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. A community observation in Minnesota for the past 22 years, Juneteenth commemorates the historic events of June 19, 1865, when African slaves in Galveston Texas learned, more than two years after the fact, that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them. Juneteenth is observed locally and nationally as a day of reflection, empowerment and preparation for future challenges. A key aim of the Juneteenth initiative is to use historical and culturally specific information to ensure a better future for African American individuals, families, and communities. "The Minnesota Lynx organization is proud to participate in the 2008 Twin Cities Juneteenth Celebration and Festival," said Vice President of Business Operations Angela Taylor. "Not only is it a day to celebrate the freedoms and opportunities that are now available in the United States, but Saturday is also a day that reminds us that we should all embrace African-American history while honoring those who have made it possible for us all to pursue and fulfill our dreams." The day of celebration will commence at 10 a.m. CDT during the Juneteenth Festival Parade beginning at the Oak Park Neighborhood Center. A Hennepin County Medical Center vehicle along with mascot "Prowl" will represent the Lynx at the parade and will distribute Lynx giveaways and vouchers for discounted tickets to Saturday night's game. The Lynx will also host a booth at the 2008 Twin Cities Juneteenth Celebration and Festival featuring Lynx giveaways, a Lynx/Wolves shooting contest and other Lynx-related items. Additional ticket-sales promotions will take place at the B96 stand. Free shuttle service, beginning at 6 p.m., will be provided to Target Center for Juneteenth attendees who wish to continue the celebration with the Lynx Saturday night. The celebration will culminate at the game between the Lynx and Comets. The game's festivities will include the presentation of the Juneteenth Spirit Award. The award will be given to Launa Newman for her continued dedication to serve her community. Fans can be a part of this historic day of celebration by purchasing tickets at www.juneteenthminnesota.org or by calling 612-673-8429.
