Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has hired former WNBA assistant Shelley Patterson to the position of Manager of Advanced Scouting and Player Development. Patterson has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach on Brian Agler's staff in Seattle.
A 20-year coaching veteran in both the professional and collegiate ranks, Patterson has spent parts of the last 11 years working in different capacities with six WNBA organizations. Prior to her time with the Seattle Storm, Patterson, a native of San Jose, Calif., served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Sting in 2006 under head coach Muggsy Bogues. Prior to that, Patterson spent the 2005 season on the Los Angeles Sparks bench as assistant coach.
"I am excited to be able to add someone of Shelley's extensive WNBA coaching background to our staff," said Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve. "Shelley has a strong understanding of our league, and in particular, the Western Conference. She'll be counted on heavily in the areas of advanced scouting and player development."
With the Lynx, Patterson will provide support in opponent scout preparation and game planning as well as individual player development.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Lynx this season," said Patterson. "Cheryl Reeve and Roger Griffith have done an excellent job putting together the roster over the winter to give the Lynx the best opportunity to compete for the WNBA Championship. I am excited to be a part of it and look forward to a great summer in Minneapolis."
Patterson began her career in Houston where she served as Director of Basketball Operations and won a WNBA Championship with the Comets during the 1999 WNBA season. She then spent four years (2000-2003) working as an assistant coach with the Indiana Fever before joining the coaching staff of the Phoenix Mercury in 2004.
In addition to her work in the WNBA, Patterson served as head coach for the National Women's Basketball League's Chicago Blaze in 2005 and worked as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Rage of the ABL during the 1998-99 season. Patterson began her coaching career in 1989 as a recruiting coordinator at Indiana State University and has held positions at Ohio University, the University of Arizona, Wake Forest and Dayton.
As a player, Patterson spent her college career at Washington State University where she still ranks among the school's all-time leaders in assists and steals.
The Minnesota Lynx will tip off the team's 12th season of basketball in the Twin Cities with its Home Opener on Sunday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. against the Washington Mystics. Lower-level tickets are available for as little as $10 a game for the 17-game home season and can be purchased by calling 612-673-8400, e-mailing tickets@lynxbasketball.com, or visiting the Lynx website at www.lynxbasketball.com.
