Minnesota Lynx News Release

Minneapolis/St. Paul - Minnesota Lynx guard Katie Smith became the first player in United States women's professional basketball history (WNBA/ABL/WBL) to surpass the 5,000-point barrier during today's game against the Detroit Shock at Target Center. Smith, who entered the game needing 11 points to reach 5,000, scored her milestone point on a 14-foot runner with 3:44 left in the contest. The Lynx went on to beat Detroit, 71-61, in front of a season-high crowd of 12,891.

Smith currently ranks fourth on the WNBA's all-time scoring list with 3,569 points. Prior to joining the Lynx, she tallied 1,431 points for the American Basketball League's Columbus Quest, bringing her U.S. professional career total to an even 5,000.

Smith, who was recently named to her fifth straight WNBA All-Star Game, is the league's career leader in three-pointers made (457) and attempted (1,219). She shares the WNBA single-game mark for three-point field goals with seven at Seattle on June 14, 2003.

Smith also holds the WNBA record for points scored in a game with 46 (July 8, 2001 at Los Angeles) and has 12 career 30-point games and 83 career 20-point outings in a Lynx uniform. Additionally, Smith owns eight WNBA single-season marks, including total points, points per game, three-pointers made and field goals made.

Smith's career records follow.
