Charlottetown Islanders News Release
With the offense firing on all cylinders as of late, the Charlottetown Islanders could all but secure fifth place in the QMJHL Eastern Conference over the next two days.
Game 2 of a mini three-game series between the Islanders and the Saint John Sea Dogs gets underway tonight at the Eastlink Centre with Charlottetown six points up their Maritime Division Rival rival with just seven games remaining in the regular season.
The Islanders (31-25-5-0) put forth an impressive offensive performance over the past weekend scoring 12 goals over two games, including a dominant 6-2 victory over the Sea Dogs at TD Station on Sunday afternoon. Brett Budgell was the catalyst in that game, coming away with a goal and 3 assists in the victory, lifting him over the 100-point plateau for his QMJHL career.
Joining him with big weekends were Ethan Crossman and Nikita Alexandrov, who each recorded six points, and Thomas Casey, who picked up two goals and an assist on the weekend. Matthew Welsh backstopped the Isles to the two victories, allowing just four goals on 53 shots through the weekend.
"It's been really good; there's no secret that we've been struggling, but we've started buying in to having a designated net-front guy, to keep shooting the puck, and to getting in to the dirty areas," said forward Cole Edwards on the team's recent scoring success. "12 goals in the last two games shows that it's obviously starting to pay off, which is nice."
The Sea Dogs (30-30-1-0) meanwhile are looking to get back in the win column after the Isles snapped their three-game winning streak. Picking up victories in the back-to-back games will pull Saint John to within two points of the Islanders for fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.
Jeremie Poirier continued his incredible season with a goal and an assist in Sunday's loss. The defenseman, projected to be selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft, had a cold February in relation to the rest of his season, but still remains one of the top scoring defensemen in the league, leading all rearguards with 19 points and second with 51 points. His teammate, Will Villeneuve, is the leader in that category, leading both the Sea Dogs and all defensemen in the QMJHL with 57 points in 61 games.
"Saint John is a good, young, up-and-coming team," added forward Thomas Casey. "We really want that fifth place in the Eastern Conference on lock; hopefully we can solidify it in these next two games."
Don't forget that tonight is the final Student Night of the season, and we're making it a big one! Student tickets are just $3.50, while all 19+ beverages are also just $3.50.
