Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Make it five wins in a row for the Charlottetown Islanders.
The offense exploded once again to the tune of six goals, making it 18 goals for the Isles over the past three games. Gaetan Jobin recorded two goals and an assist, while Nikita Alexandrov continued his torrid pace with two more points including the game-winning goal, as Charlottetown defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-2 once again.
The Islanders pounced on the Sea Dogs from the outset of the game, continuing the trend that has worked well for them over this hot streak: Shots. The Isles peppered Sea Dogs starter Noah Patenaude with shots from the drop of the puck, and it got to the rookie netminder early; Jobin would start his big game by picking the pocket of a Sea Dogs defender before finding Cedric Desruisseaux alone in front. He'd wait out Patenaude before going high on the sprawling goalie, giving Desruisseaux 12 goals on the season and back-to-back games with goals against the Sea Dogs.
Thomas Casey would extend the lead later in the period before Alexandrov joined in on the fun. On a late period powerplay, Lukas Cormier would find Alexandrov with a perfect pass right in the slot. He'd blast a one-timer past Patenaude for his 23rd goal on the year.
The second period was all Islanders, particularly Gaetan Jobin. The Swiss Sniper had himself a big period and kicked it off with an odd-man rush alongside Alexandrov. The St. Louis Blues prospect would cut through the middle of the ice, drawing in three Sea Dogs players before sliding a pass over to a waiting Jobin who'd wire it past Patenaude for his 12th goal on the year.
Alexandrov said that the team is really feeling the chemistry they've been building over the past few weeks.
"In practice you're able to build chemistry and confidence with your linemates, and when you have that chemistry you start to know where your linemates will be on the ice," explained Alexandrov. "When you're able to move the puck quicker, it makes the plays easier and helps to create more chances."
Jobin wasn't done there; in the dying moments of the period, Ethan Crossman would snap a quick shot in his direction. Jobin would deflect the puck over the shoulder of Patenaude for his second goal of the period, giving the Islanders a 5-0 lead heading in to the final frame.
Justin Gill would wrap the game up with his fifth goal of the season before the Sea Dogs scored twice in the final frame, but it wouldn't be enough. The Islanders pull ahead of the Sea Dogs even further in the Eastern Conference standings with the victory.
Matthew Welsh made 27 saves for the victory, his fourth game in a row allowing two goals or less. Desruisseaux and Crossman each added multi-point games while Drew Elliott, Cole Edwards, Brendon Clavelle, and William Trudeau each added single assists.
"Our powerplay was really good in this game," added Alexandrov. "We did our best to shut them down and hopefully it will carry over into our next game."
The Islanders and Sea Dogs will do it all over again tomorrow night at the Eastlink Centre. It's another Olde Dublin Pub Happy Hour game; Carter MacLellan will be playing music in the Moose Light Lounge, happy hour pricing will be in effect from 6:30-7:30 and for an hour after the game, and free apps will be available courtesy of the Olde Dublin Pub!
