Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - The reigning USHL player of the week put on a show at the Viaero Event Center on Friday night. Tri-City Storm (21-24-6) forward Trevor Mingoia scored a natural hat trick in the second half of the game and brought his team from behind to defeat the Omaha Lancers (30-23-0) 6-3.
The win was the sixth consecutive victory for the Storm over Omaha this season. Other goal scorers for the Storm included Trevor Moore, Ben Foster and Heikki Liedes.
It was a see-saw battle in the first as both teams scored twice. Moore got the offense started, taking a long, cross-ice pass from L'Esperance to the net and beating Omaha netminder Alex Lyon to make it 1-0 Storm.
The Lancers knotted the score halfway through the opening frame with a tally from forward Connor Chatham.
But the Storm re-took the lead 22 seconds later on a great play in front. Brian Ward won a faceoff in the offensive zone to defenseman Garrett Cecere, and he moved into the corner with the puck. A lane opened up and the defenseman found Foster in front of the net for a perfect deflection into the upper right hand corner to make it 2-1.
Omaha made it 2-2 on a wrap-around goal by Jake Randolph at 11:55.
In the second, the Lancers took a 3-2 lead when Robbie Baillargeon scored on a one-timer from teammate Drew Melanson.
Just over a minute later, Nolan Gluchowski was whistled for covering the puck in the crease and a penalty shot was awarded to Omaha. Tyler Moy, who took the attempt, missed the net with his shot and the Storm remained one goal behind.
It was in the second half of the middle period that things turned in Tri-City's favor.
Mingoia found the back of the net for the first time off a great pass by Ward on the power play at 14:07 of the second to tie the game.
The forward continued his dominance just over a minute later, taking a pass from defenseman Cutler Martin and dangling through the neutral zone before beating Lyon with a wrist shot to the bottom right corner of the net to give the Storm the lead, 4-3.
Tri-City stepped up their defensive presence in the third, holding the Lancers scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Mingoia and Liedes added empty net tallies at the end of the final period to seal the victory for the Storm.
Tri-City now welcomes the Muskegon Lumberjacks to the Viaero Event Center for the teams' only matchup of the season on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Tim Bonner, Jason Cotton and Kyle Eastman along with defenseman Eli May.
