Indiana Ice News Release

When outshot 36-12 after two periods, you would not expect to be in the game. That was the case for the Indiana Ice when they faced-off against Team USA Saturday evening. Amazingly, the game was tied at 5-apiece despite the dominating play of the U-18 squad in the first 40 minutes.

The shot disparity caught up to the Ice in the third period when the Developmental Team scored three unanswered goals to capture an 8-5 decision at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Team USA finished with 51 shots on goal and was able to neutralize a hat-trick by Indy's Mikhail Plotnikov.

Despite the eye-popping shot advantage at the second break, Indiana evened the count at 5-5. Alex Talcott started the comeback when he received a pass at the goal-mouth from Mitch Hults. His score at 5:48 of the period answered Hayden's second goal of the evening in the middle period's fourth minute. Joseph Widmar earned an assist on Talcott's 6th goal of the season.

Plotnikov's third of the night cut the visitor lead to a single goal when his potted his hat-trick tally at the 11-minute mark.

Patrick Newell sent the teams to the dressing room in a tied game with his score 1:46 before second break. This time, Plotnikov dished out a scoring assist.

The U-18's shut the door on the Ice in the third period and scored what became the game-winner 4:30 into the third period. Anthony Louis gave the visitors a 6-5 lead. Dawson Cook gave Team USA a two-goal lead just over three minutes later and J.T. Compher made a two-goal night with an empty-netter with 48 seconds before the final horn.

The good news in the first period for Indy was that they scored on half of their shots. The bad news was they only had four. Meanwhile, the visitors peppered the hosts with 23 shots and made good on four of their attempts.

Each team scored in the game's first two minutes. The U-18's lit the lamp 1:23 after the opening faceoff when Michael McCarron scored his first of two goals in the opening frame. Plotnikov duplicated McCarron's pair of first period goals, but McCarron's teammates John Hayden and Compher chipped in with scores.

Indiana's Russian forward scored his first of the evening when he strong-armed his way to the goal nine seconds after the US squad jumped to a 1-0 lead. Lukas Laub set up Plotnikov's second score of the period when his scoring pass set up the one-timer with 1:23 before the first intermission.

That score cut the visitor's lead to 3-2, but Compher's goal at 18:51 gave the Ann Arbor-based team a 4-2 advantage after 20 minutes.
