Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to cut a four-run deficit in half on Wednesday night against the Windy City ThunderBolts, but saw the home team pile on five late runs en route to a 9-2 loss at Ozinga Field, ending their six-game win streak.
Windy City got to Kaleb Schmidt (4-1) in the bottom of the first inning, as they drew two leadoff walks and plated two runs on an RBI groundout by Rob Calabrese and a double by Jairus Richards along with an error to take a 2-0 lead. They would double that lead to 4-0 in the third inning on an RBI single by Rob Weissheier and a sacrifice fly by Jack Strunc. Stevie Ledesma then came in and held the line out of the bullpen, throwing four scoreless innings and retiring the final 12 batters that he faced, giving the Miners' offense a chance to come back.
After being shut out through the first six innings by ThunderBolts starter Kenny Mathews (4-5), Southern Illinois would break through in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single by Ian Walters followed by a sacrifice fly by Gianfranco Wawoe to make the score 4-2 at the seventh-inning stretch. But Windy City would score three runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2. The ThunderBolts then added two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin to even the midweek series at one game apiece.
The Miners will look to bounce back and win the series in the rubber game tomorrow, Thursday, July 15, at 7:05 p.m. Gunnar Kines will start for Southern Illinois against Windy City right-hander Logan Wiley.
