Miners' Win Streak Snapped in Extra Innings

August 11, 2019 - Frontier League (FL) - Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners saw their win streak halted at ten in a row on Sunday night at Rent One Park, as Quincy Nieporte hit a two-out, tiebreaking home run in the top of the 11th to deal the Miners a 5-2 defeat in the series finale.

Schaumburg scored in the top of the first inning for the second game in a row, as Jack Parenty led off with a single and Clint Hardy walked before they were sacrificed to second and third base. After a groundout to first by Nieporte with the runners holding, Jamey Smart's throw to second base to try and double off Hardy bounced away for an error, allowing Parenty to score to make it 1-0.

Schaumburg starter Gunnar Kines made the lead stand up by allowing just three baserunners to the Miners' offense in the first five innings, and the Boomers doubled the lead to 2-0 on a Parenty sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. Southern Illinois would then get on the board in the sixth, with Yeltsin Gudino's one-out single followed by singles from both Gianfranco Wawoe and Smart, the latter of which brought in the run to make it 2-1.

The Miners were then able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth- Gudino led off with a single, and scored all the way from first base when Wawoe doubled over a leaping Parenty in left field to make the score 2-2, and put the potential lead run in scoring position with no outs. But they could not bring in the lead run against Dylan Stutsman that inning, and despite leadoff singles in the ninth and tenth innings against Connor Eller (5-2), the score remained tied into the 11th inning.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, Parenty doubled to put runners at second and third base with no one out against Nick Durazo (4-3). Durazo then struck out Clint Hardy, and got Chase Dawson to hit a ground ball to Smart at first for the second out, with Smart throwing home to retire the lead runner. But the first pitch to Nieporte was hit over the left field wall for a go-ahead, three run home run, and the Eller struck out the side in the bottom half to seal the end of the Miners' long win streak.

Gudino finished 3-for-5 with both of the Miners' runs scored, while Wawoe went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, but despite out-hitting Schaumburg 10-5 in the contest, Southern Illinois was denied the sweep. After a day off on Monday, the Miners welcome in the West Division-leading Florence Freedom for a critical three-game series beginning on Tuesday, August 13, at 6:35 p.m.
