For the first time in 2018, the in-state rivals Sussex County Miners and New Jersey Jackals opened up a series on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In the top of the second, catcher Luis Allen hit a two run single to put the Miners ahead early, 2-0.

The Jackals responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning on third baseman Gerald Bautista's RBI single.

Left fielder Connor Hofmann gave the Jackals its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth when he delivered a two run single to score first baseman Daniel Canela and Bautista, making the game 3-2, New Jersey.

Sussex County then answered to tie the game in the top of the sixth when third baseman Mikey Reynolds hit an RBI single.

The game unraveled for the Jackals in the eighth inning, when Sussex County plated three runs to take the lead and eventually go on to win the game.

An error by relief pitcher Jose Velez brought in a run for the Miners.

Later, a fielder's choice and a RBI double by designated hitter Martin Figueroa made the game 6-3, Sussex County.

New Jersey tried to muster up a comeback in the bottom of the ninth.

Shortstop Rony Cabrera hit an RBI single to score Bautista, but the game would end when designated hitter Dean Green flew out to center field.

New Jersey now falls to 6-11 on the young season, while the Miners improve to 12-6 and have won a season high four games in a row while remaining in first place.

The series shifts back to Skylands Stadium on Thursday, with the final two games being played in a double header.

First pitch in game one is set for 10:35 A.M. while game two is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
