Sussex County Miners News Release

Pomona, NY - The Sussex County Miners (2-2) came away with a doubleheader and weekend split with the Rockland Boulders (2-2), winning the first game 6-5 before falling in the second game 8-7 in front of 1,560 fans at Palisades Credit Union Park.

The Miners took the opener in large part to a four-run top of the fourth inning. Breland Almadova would reach on an error to start the inning, score 2 batters later on a Martin Figueroa sacrifice fly, and Figueroa and Luis Alen - who had singled earlier in the inning - would come around on Jarred Mederos' three-run homerun to give the Miners a 6-2 lead at the time. Rockland would make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh on a Cody Regis three-run homerun that wrapped around the foul pole, but Brent Jones came on to record the final two outs to notch his second save. Mark McCoy (1-0) threw 3 2/3 innings of stellar relief, not allowing a hit or walk and striking out four batters to get the win.

In the nightcap, the Miners got three runs in the first inning on an Audy Ciriaco RBI single and a two-run homerun by KJ Woods to take a three run lead. But the Boulders were able to get two in the bottom of the first and then score four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead on Sussex County. But the Miners, down 7-4 in the seventh, scored three times in the top of the inning, the last of which came across on a Ciriaco sacrifice fly, to tie the game at 7. But in the bottom of the inning, Mike Montville hit a long drive over the left-center field wall to walk it off for Rockland in the nightcap.

The Miners have two days off before returning home for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday night against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. First pitch for Wednesday night's game is 7:05 pm.
