OTTAWA - A Coco Johnson two-run home run helped the Champions get a crucial split of a double header on the back half of a Sunday afternoon at the ballpark. The Champions dropped Game 1 of the twin bill 6-2, and then rebounded to take the 5-3 victory.

Hal Lanier, the Champions manager, thought the comeback was good for team moral after a tough start to the afternoon I Game 1.

"I think when we were down, Coco really brought the guys back up when he hit his home run," Lanier said after the double header had completed.

The day's first game began in a similar way to Friday's home opener - when the Champions gave up a handful of runs in the early stages and found themselves in a substantial hole.

After an error at first base, the Aigles took advantage of the extra baserunners and scored the first four runs of the game off a Kevin Cornelius double and a few extra base hits.

Directly after, much like Friday, an Ottawa response made things interesting. In the bottom of the third, Steve Brown and Steve Nyisztor each had base hits to score runs. That sliced the Trois-Rivieres lead down to two runs - but not for long.

A solo blast over the left field fence off the bat of Anthony Hermelyn would act as insurance for the Aigles, giving them a 5-2 lead. They didn't look back - taking the first game 6-2.

Trois-Rivieres went up early for the third straight game of the series in the second game of the afternoon, with Anthony Hermelyn stepping up for another two-run knock in the third inning.

But after going down 3-0, the Champions had other ideas.

Johnson blasted a two-run home run to cut the Aigles lead to one, and the Champions would ride that momentum into the later innings of the game.

Two more runs came in the fifth courtesy of Daniel Bick and Brown, putting an exclamation point on the double header for the Champions.

Ottawa will welcome a new opponent into RCGT Park tomorrow afternoon, when the New Jersey Jackals roll into town for a three game set beginning with a Victoria Day matinee.
