Sussex County Miners News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The Sussex County Miners (61-34) split a doubleheader with the New Jersey Jackals (46-50), and in the process secure the 2018 Can-Am League regular season championship. This is the first regular season title in franchise history, and the first time a team from Sussex County has clinched a regular season top position since the New Jersey Cardinals won the New-York Penn League's McNamara Division in their inaugural season of 1994.

The Miners took game 1 by a final score of 6-4. Offensively, the Miners hit three home runs. Daniel Mateo hit a two-run shot followed by a Martin Figueroa solo shot in the second inning, and an Audy Ciriaco longball leading off the sixth. The winning runs were pushed across in the seventh on a two-run single by Jared McDonald. Martire Garcia (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win for the Miners.

In game two, Sussex County was victimized by Andy Mocahbee. The Jackals catcher accounted for all five New Jersey runs with a grand slam and a solo home run. The Miners offense would scratch runs across in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not pull closer than the two run deficit they entered the ninth with. Michael Wagner (3-4) went the distance for the Miners in a losing effort.

In the doubleheader, Miners outfielder Breland Almadova stole two more bases - one in each game - to run his season total to 48 stolen bases, one shy of the Can-Am League record for most stolen bases in a season.

The Miners and Jackals will get together tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Yogi Berra Stadium.
