Sussex County Miners News Release

Augusta, NJ - The Sussex County Miners (20-10) used a fourteen hit attack on Father's Day, and held off a late rally to defeat the Ottawa Champions (9-18) by a final score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,037 fans at Skylands Stadium. The win pushed the Miners to ten games over .500 for the first time in franchise history.

The Miner offense got going in the second inning when Jayce Ray hit a sacrifice fly scoring Nick Zaharion, who had singled to lead off the inning. Sussex County would add two more runs in the third inning during a two out rally, in which Martin Figueroa and Rubi Silva both singled, and Zaharion drove both of them home with a two-run double.

After Ottawa pulled one back in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Jordan Caillouet, the Miners quickly answered when - with two outs once more - Jarred Mederos would single, steal second, and score on Audy Ciriaco's RBI double.

The Miner offense would tack on one more run in the eighth, a run that would prove to be pivotal. Breland Almadova would single, steal second for his league-leading 20th swipe of the year, and score on a Mederos sacrifice fly. At the time, the Miners would lead 5-1.

But Ottawa made things interesting in the ninth. With Cory Jones bidding for the complete game, Ottawa would get a leadoff double from Vincent Guglietti, a one-out infield single from Tillman Pugh, and then a two-out home run from Mike Blanke to cut the Miners advantage to 5-4. Kenny Koplove would come on to get the final out and secure the win for the Miners.

Jones (3-1) would throw 8 2/3 innings, ultimately allowing four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three. Koplove picked up his second save in as many chances. Austin Chrismon took the loss, allowing four runs on twelve hits over six innings.

The Miners have Monday off before beginning a three-game series on Tuesday against the Salina Stockade.
