Rockland County - The Sussex County Miners broke through for three runs in the top of the seventh inning and completed a sweep of the Sunday doubleheader against New York, defeating the Boulders 5-2 at Palisades Credit Union Park.
Facing New York closer Tanner Kiest in the seventh and final inning of the second game of the twinbill with the score tied at 2-2, the Miners got a lead off walk by Daniel Herrera, who was bunted over to second by Jalen Hubbard.
After Aaron Knapp walked, Chuck Taylor lined a double to left-center that scored both runners to give Sussex County a 4-2 lead. Taylor would steal third and then score on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
Jalen Miller, Sr. was the winning pitcher for Sussex County, raising his season mark to 2-1, while Kiest fell to 2-5 on the year with the loss.
The regularly scheduled game was knotted at that 2-2 score through four innings. New York jumped ahead with a single run in the first stanza on an RBI double by Kevonte Mitchell. The Miners came back with two in the fourth on Audy Ciriaco's double, but the Boulders evened the game in the bottom of the stanza on Gian Martellini's solo home run, his fourth of the year.
In the opener, the completion of the suspended game from the previous night, the Miners scored four runs in the eighth inning and rallied for an 8-4 win.
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Kaleo Johnson, who had struck out in his first three trips to the plate in the contest, sliced a double down the right field line that plated two runs and gave Sussex County the lead. The Miners then added insurance runs in the frame on an RBI single by Juan Kelly and a sacrifice fly by Joey Rose.
Sussex County added two runs in the ninth on a single by Taylor and a sacrifice fly from Kelly.
The Miners on Saturday had taken a 2-0 lead on a third inning solo home run by City Culver, his fourth of the season, and a fourth inning sacrifice fly off the bat of Ciriaco.
Rain forced a stoppage in the bottom of the fourth with Boulders on first and third and one out. When play resumed on Sunday, Ray Hernandez, the first batter of the day, homered to right to give New York a 3-2 lead. The home run was Hernandez' 13th of the season.
The Boulders were then held hitless by Miners' pitching until Mitchell led off the ninth with a single. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Phil Caulfield.
Robert Klinchock, the fourth of seven Miners' pitchers used in the game, got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year, while Alex Mack, who came on to start the fifth inning for New York, took the loss in his first decision of the year.
