New Jersey Jackals News Release
Augusta, NJ - In his second start with New Jersey, left-hander Jayson Miller struck out six batters and allowed just one run in 7 2/3 innings as the New Jersey Jackals won their third straight game over the Sussex Skyhawks, 3-1, on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon at Skylands Park.
Miller, who carried a shutout into the eighth inning, lost his early perfect game bid when catcher Jon Gossard lined a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Gossard at-bat followed a six-minute delay after Skyhawks manager Ed Ott was ejected for arguing a catch at the right field wall by Kevin Clark on a high fly ball off the bat of Kris Sanchez.
Prior to Miller sending down the first 14 batters he faced, the Jackals staked their starter to a 3-0 lead before he took the mound when Shawn Riggans delivered an RBI single and second baseman Travis Jones laced a two-run double to the gap in left center in the top of the first inning.
New Jersey managed just two hits the rest of the contest, but Miller made the early lead hold with some help from relievers Edward Rodriguez and Edgar Estanga. Rodriguez retired the only batter he faced to end the eighth while Estanga sent the Skyhawks down in order in the ninth to record his first save of the season. Miller (1-0) allowed just four hits without surrendering a walk.
Sussex third baseman Nick Giarraputo's third home run of the season, a solo shot to left with two outs in the eighth, was the only damage against the Jackals. Sussex starter Jusef Frias (1-3) took the loss after yielding three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings while relievers Donald Jordat and Jared Lock each contributed a scoreless frame.
The Jackals (3-3 second half, 22-30 overall) and Skyhawks (1-5, 26-26) conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Skylands Park. New Jersey hasn't yet announced its starting pitcher, but Sussex will send left-hander Jeff Icenogle to the mound (4-2, 5.34). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Jackal Bites: Jackals catcher Angel Flores was helped off the field with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning... Shawn Riggans' first-inning RBI single came in his first at-bat off the disabled list after missing New Jersey's last nine contests... With the win, the Jackals evened the season series against Sussex at 8-8.
