DENVER – Colorado Mammoth goaltender Erik Miller has announced his retirement from the National Lacrosse League. In a related move, the Mammoth traded a second-round pick in the 2005 entry draft to Minnesota in exchange for goaltender John McLellan.

Miller, who went 8-6 as the Mammoth's starting goaltender during the team's inaugural season in 2003, decided to retire so that he could focus on his career in the medical sales industry. Miller was 14-11 in his career with a 13.40 goals-against average and .740 save percentage. He was in net for the Mammoth's lone playoff victory in 2003, but only started two games in 2004 and had not played this season.

"The Mammoth would like to thank Erik Miller for his effort, professionalism and commitment to the team," general manager Steve Govett said. "He has been a leader on and off the floor and a player that fans admired. He now has an opportunity to see his business flourish and we wish him nothing but the best. Meanwhile, we are working to find a position within the organization that will keep Erik with the Mammoth in some capacity."

To fill Miller's roster spot the Mammoth acquired the 22-year-old McLellan. The Toronto native played for Mammoth coach Jamie Batley last summer in the Ontario Lacrosse Association, helping the Peterborough Lakers win the Mann Cup, Canada's national championship.

McLellan was a first-round pick in the 2002 draft by Toronto, but never played for the Rock. He signed with Minnesota prior to this season and was 0-1 with a 9.36 GAA and .795 save percentage, backing up Swarm starter Matt Disher.

"John is a very talented, young player," Govett said. "We're excited to see how he develops. He'll have the opportunity to play behind Gee Nash, one of the league's best goaltenders and see shots in practice by some of the best offensive players in the game."

The Mammoth's next game is Friday night at 7:30 (Altitude / KCKK-AM 1600) against the Calgary Roughnecks at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.
