Tavares and Powless win weekly awards

Buffalo, N.Y. (February 2, 2005) --- The Buffalo Bandits announced today that John Tavares has been named the National Lacrosse League's Overall and Offensive Player of the Week and Delby Powless has been named Rookie of the Week for their performances against Philadelphia in Week 5.

"It's great to see John and Delby get recognized for their efforts," said Bandits General Manager Kurt Silcott. "We feel we possess a pretty solid 1-2-3 punch on offense with Tavares, Powless and Dan Teat. All three are racking up impressive numbers so far this season. Hopefully, the trio will give opposing defenses fits all season long."

Tavares earned his 11th career Overall Player of the Week award after recording eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in two games. The Toronto, Ontario native currently leads the NLL in points (34), ranks second in goals (17) and is tied for second in assists (17) with teammate Dan Teat. He needs just eight assists to become the first player in NLL history to record 500 career assists and nine goals to become the second player to reach 500 career goals. The Offensive Player of the Week award is the fourth of his career. The Offensive Player of the Week award was created prior to the 2002 season.

Powless received his first ever NLL award after recording four goals and four assists for eight points in two games over the weekend. He currently is tied for seventh in the league in assists (14) and tenth in points (22). In five career games with the Bandits, Powless has registered eight goals. Since the award's conception prior to the 2002 season, only one other Bandit has ever been awarded Rookie of the Week honors. Last season, AJ Shannon was named NLL Rookie of the Week twice, following Week 1 and Week 9.
