Sting Acquire Derks From Buffalo

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting General Manager and Head Coach Bob Hamley announced today that the Sting has acquired forward Jonas Derks from the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for Arizona's 2nd round draft choice in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft and 2nd round draft choice in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft.

Derks, 30, has collected 3 goals, 5 assists, 8 points and 2 penalty minutes (PM) in 3 games with Buffalo this season. In his 4th season with the Bandits, the Oshawa, Ontario native departs Buffalo ranked 6th on the franchise all-time list in goals (71), 7th in points (67) and 8th in assists (67).

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Derks has registered 107-83-190, 332 loose balls and 84 PM in 67 career regular season NLL games split between Buffalo, New York and Baltimore. Last season, he tallied 24-30-54 in 15 games with Buffalo. His best season came two seasons ago when Derks set career highs with 33 goals, 61 points and 16 games played. Derks has also played in 5 career playoff games (all with Buffalo), recording 13-9-22 and 2 PM. Buffalo acquired Derks from the New York Saints on Feb. 13, 2002 along with Roy Colsey and Brad Dairon in exchange for Chris Driscoll, Jason Clark, Phil Wetherup and Rob Kirkby.

Derks is the second acquisition in 24 hours for the Sting, who yesterday signed Tony Henderson as a free agent. Both players will make their Arizona Sting debuts on Friday against Anaheim at Glendale Arena. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.

The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The Sting will play 16 regular season games in 2005 including 8 home games at Glendale Arena. All 8 of the Sting home lacrosse games at Glendale Arena will be on weekends, with six coming on Friday evenings and two on Saturday evenings.
