Milkmen Blank Sioux City Behind Myles Smith Complete Game

Franklin, WI - The Milwaukee Milkmen ran away with game one of their series at Sioux City. Fueled by starting pitcher Myles Smith who threw all nine innings for the Milkmen.

Through the first six innings, Smith had only given up two hits, and no walks. Including a stretch where he retired 10 consecutive batters.

He later gave up another two hits and his first walk of the day in the seventh, but he quickly struck out the next batter to leave all three runners stranded.

Over the last two innings Smith would not allow another hit, only two runners got on base in the eighth via two errors, but Smith also closed out that inning without allowing a run. In the final inning, Smith retired the first two batters before finishing the night with a swinging strikeout to complete the game. He finished with 10 strikeouts while only giving up four hits and one walk.

"His pitch-count wasn't too high and we gave him the opportunity if he didn't give up a run, and wanted him to get the complete game shutout," Milkmen manager Anthony Barone said. "It was early in the fifth or sixth inning we started talking about it and when he kept putting up zero's it made the decision very easy."

The Milkmen offense was also on fire, taking advantage of Sioux City errors and racking up nine runs between the second and fifth innings. Started by Dylan Kelly who singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored when the Explorers shortstop sailed a ball over the first baseman's head in what should've been a groundout of Logan Trowbridge.

Then the big inning was the third for Milwaukee. Bryan Torres drew a walk and then stole second base, the catcher's attempt to throw him out went wide and Torres then found himself at third base. Chad Sedio then hit a sacrifice-fly to drive Torres in. In the next two at-bats Mason Davis and Keon Barnum hit back to back home runs to extend the lead to four. Correlle Prime then singled while Kelly and Aaron Hill drew walks to load the bases.Trowbridge then hit a sacrifice fly to score Prime, and after Will Kengor drew a walk to load the bases once more, Torres hit a single to score both Hill and Kelly. The Milkmen closed the inning with a 7-0 lead.

The Milkmen then scored two more runs over the next two innings when an error on the Sioux City second baseman allowed Prime to score and a solo home run from Kengor made the game 9-0. The Milkmen would not score another run but would win by the same margin.

Needless to say manager Barone was pleased with the performance.

"Good teams make others pay when they make mistakes," Barone said. "And anytime you have a pitcher that's in a rhythm like that it makes it really easy."

The Milkmen will play two more games at Sioux City before returning home on Friday to take on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 6:35 p.m.
