Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, November 3, 2004 - Montreal Alouettes' free safety Barron Miles plays his role close to perfection on the field as well as in the community. He was rewarded for his community work by the CFL Players Association and was nominated as the Alouettes' representative for the Tom Pate Award, an award given to the player who displays qualities that distinguish him from his peers.
The recipient of the award should embody the qualities that distinguished Tom Pate. Aside from displaying outstanding sportsmanship, the player must have made a contribution to his team, his community and his association.
Much like Tom Pate himself, Miles was educated at Nebraska and played football with the Cornhuskers. Since he arrived in Montreal in 1998, Miles has always been involved in the community. Founder of the Reaching Out to Children School is Cool Basketball Jam, Barron provided Quebec school kids with the opportunity to speak with Alouettes' football players in regards to their futures and the obstacles that face adolescents.
Barron and his wife Jennifer are spokespersons for the Cuddles Foundation of Royal Victoria Hospital. With this program, Barron and Jennifer, proud parents themselves of three children including Raven who was born 16 weeks premature, join a team of volunteers who lend a helping hand and counsel families that are dealing with premature babies. They provide a day-care center for the families' other kids and spend some time cuddling the premature babies. Moreover, Barron organizes an annual charity basketball game to raise funds for the Cuddles Foundation. Miles also takes part in various charity events throughout the year such as the Alouettes blood drive for Héma Québec.
This season, Miles has recorded 33 defensive tackles, two interceptions, one sack, one special team tackle and knocked down one pass. Barron Miles holds a degree in early childhood development from the University of Nebraska. He is a four-time All-Star (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003) with the Montreal Alouettes and was the 2002 East Division Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
