CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the week

Published on November 3, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Week

WR – Matt Dominguez #88

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights

Dominguez had seven catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Game Notes:

Dominguez was the go-to receiver for Henry Burris in this critical game for home field advantage.

With approximately two minutes left in the game and down by three points, Saskatchewan needed a field goal or a touchdown. Dominguez caught the ball at the sideline 50 yards from the goal line. He straight-armed the first defender and sidestepped the second to race into the end zone for a touchdown, putting the Roughriders in the lead, but unfortunately the opposition won on the last play of the game.

Dominguez will definitely be the go-to player for Roughriders in the playoffs versus the Eskimos.

1st Runner Up: Geroy Simon #81, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Anthony Calvillo #13, Montreal Alouettes

Judge: Bob Krouse

Defensive Player of the Week

DB – Chris Martin #29

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights

Martin had five tackles, two quarterback sacks and one interception.

Game Notes:

As a mid-season addition to the 2004 Tiger-Cats defense, Martin proved himself worthy. He was a dominate force and his big play of the day came late in the fourth quarter. Martin made a great interception by taking the ball from the hands of the receiver.

As they enter the playoffs against the Argonauts, the Tiger-Cats must feel confident about their decision to add Martin to their roster.

1st Runner Up: Barrin Simpson #51, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Eric Carter #2, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Judge: Bob Krouse

Lineman of the Week

DE – Brent Johnson #97

BC Lions

Highlights

Brent Johnson had two tackles, two quarterback sacks and a forced fumble. The fumble was recovered and resulted in a touchdown for the Lions.

Game Notes:

Johnson's performance was reminiscent of Hall of Famer Herb Gray, the first defensive player to win the Outstanding Lineman Award. Gray gave 100 per cent to every play in every game – there were no unimportant games.

Johnson played to win, coming hard on each play and forced a fumble leading to a pivotal touchdown in the B.C. Lion's victory.

1st Runner Up: Terrell Jurineack #79, Saskatchewan Roughriders

2nd Runner Up: Joe Montford #53, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Judge: Bob Krouse

Special Teams Player of the Week

WR – Craig Yeast #5

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights

Yeast returned one punt for eight yards and two missed field goals – one for 25 yards and one for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Game Notes:

Yeast was last week's offensive star of the week and has generated over 308 yards in the last two games.

Whether he is used as a receiver, return specialist or both, Yeast's performance in the playoff game with the Argonauts will be a determining factor. The Tiger-Cats must find ways to put the ball into his hands if they are to be successful.

1st Runner Up: Aaron Lockett #84, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Paul McCallum #4, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Judge: Bob Krouse
