Arkansas Travelers News Release

Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR – The Midland RockHounds (34-21) pounded out 18 base hits in a 9-0 shutout over the Arkansas Travelers (28-27). All nine Midland starters had a base hit, while six had at least two base hits. Midland SS Omar Quintanilla, 2B Mark Kiger and RF Brian Staviksy all had three base hits while CF Steve Stanley hit Midland's first grand slam (4) of the season. Four RockHounds pitchers combined to throw the first visiting shutout at Ray Winder Field during the 2005 season and held the Travs to just six base hits. LHP Leonard Landeros (2-1) tossed five shutout innings in a spot start with four strikeouts and just two hits. RF Tommy Murphy and 1B Mike Eylward each had two base hits. Arkansas LHP Tim Bittner (1-5) lost his fifth consecutive decision allowing four runs on 11 hits, two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings. The loss is the Travs sixth in eight games.

The teams traded two scoreless innings until the third. Midland 3B Francis Gomez led off the third with a single followed with a one-out single by Kiger and a two-out single by Andre Ethier to knock in Gomez. Midland DH Casey Myers then smashed a two-run double to right field for a 3-0 Midland lead.

Hounds C Jeremy Brown led off the fourth inning with a single then went to second base on Quintanilla's first single. Bittner issued a one-out walk to Stanley to load the bases before getting the second out. Lloyd Turner then hit a hard grounder to deep short for an infield single that brought another run home for a 4-0 Midland lead.

Bittner left the game after the sixth inning giving way to RHP Mark O'Sullivan. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out, but a strikeout and a foul out gave him a chance to get out of the inning. Stanley followed with a drive over the right field fence to break the game open with an 8-0 Midland lead. Kiger followed with an infield single and scored on a double by Turner to cap the scoring.

The game was played in 2:34 and the paid attendance was 3,864.

The second game of the series is set for Saturday night at Ray Winder Field. Arkansas has LHP Daniel Davidson (5-2, 4.19 ERA) pitching against Midland LHP Drew Dickinson (2-5, 6.40 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. and the gates open at 6:10 p.m.
