June 3, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Randy Leek turned in another great performance, working into the eighth inning in winning his fourth straight start, as the Springfield Cardinals edged the Frisco RoughRiders 4-3 on Friday night at Hammons Field. The Cardinals are now 27-28, just one game under .500 for the first time since a victory over Wichita on April 20th, brought their record to 6-7.

Juan Diaz had two hits including a two-run homer in the second inning as the Cards took the lead for good at 2-1. After Tyler Minges walked to open the bottom of the second inning, Juan Diaz homered for the third time since joining the Cardinals, crushing a pitch from Frisco starter Wil Rodriguez to right-center field.

The Cards added a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth, taking a 4-1 lead. In the fifth, Shaun Boyd's RBI single scored Diaz, who opened the inning with a double. In the sixth, Tyler Minges picked up a two-out single, then moved to third on a single by Aaron Herr, giving Herr a hit in 15 straight games. Minges would score from third when Juan Diaz' ground ball to third baseman Jace Brewer was thrown in the dirt to Frisco first baseman Jason Hart.

The Riders got within a run in the eighth inning against Randy Leek (6-2), getting a one-out homer from Ruddy Yan, his first of the year. His two-run drive down the left field line barely cleared the fence, cutting the Springfield lead to 4-3.

Evan Rust was called upon with two outs in the eighth inning to face Jason Hart, who grounded out to third baseman Travis Hanson to end the eighth. Hart, a former SMS Bear and Springfield native, finished the game 0-4.

Rust would get out of a serious jam in the ninth, striking out Jace Brewer with runners at first and third and only one out. With two down and men at the corners, pinch-hitter Jared Abruzzo popped up to left fielder Papo Bolivar to end the ballgame, giving Rust his third save and second in as many nights.

Riders left-hander Wil Rodriguez (4-3) earned Frisco's first complete game of the year, going eight innings in the loss.

The Cards look to make it three straight and five out of six in this home stand on Saturday night. Stuart Pomeranz (0-0) makes his third start since joining the Cards on Saturday night, and will be followed by St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Cal Eldred, who will make his first appearance on a rehab appearance for Springfield. Frisco will counter with Nick Massit (2-6). Game time on Saturday night at Hammons Field will be 6:10pm and gates open at 4:10pm on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday night, American Family Insurance and Ozark Food Harvest are encouraging fans to bring a canned item or cash donation in support of National Hunger Awareness Week. 2,500 fans will also receive a free Koozi, thanks to American Family Insurance on Saturday night. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 and online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
