Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Midland RockHounds exploded for six runs in the eighth and then three in the eleventh, dropping the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 9-6 on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
Midland broke a 6-6, 11th-inning tie, when Cory Doyne's wild pitch scored Vasili Spanos from third base with the go-ahead run. Mark Kiger and Kurt Suzuki also collected run-scoring hits in the 11th, as Midland took a commanding 9-6 lead.
The Cards had a chance in the bottom of the inning, as they rallied against Midland closer Marcus McBeth. Jarrett Hoffpauir singled with one out, then moved to second on Shaun Boyd's two-out walk. McBeth earned his 17th save of the year though, striking out Mike McCoy looking on three pitches to end the game.
Midland scored six times in the eighth inning, ruining Jordan Pals' pitching performance over the first seven innings. Pals took a three-hit 3-0 shutout into the eighth, but allowed the first two hitters to reach, giving up back-to-back singles. Cards' closer Mark Worrell came out of the bullpen and struggled, allowing Midland to tie the game at 3-3, before allowing a three-run homer to Brian Stavisky, putting the Hounds up 6-3.
Springfield rallied to tie it by scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth. Juan Richardson's mis-played double pulled the Cards to within a run, as Shaun Boyd and Mike McCoy, who both walked, both scored to make it 6-5. With runners at first and third, Amaury Marti, who earlier homered for the fifth time this year, legged out a fielder's choice to tie the game at 6-6.
After Marti's solo shot in the second put Springfield up 1-0, they added to their lead with Kevin Estrada's squeeze-bunt in the fifth, giving the Redbirds a 2-0 advantage. A two-out RBI double by Juan Richardson in the sixth put the Cards up 3-0 against Midland starter Kevin Olsen.
Midland's Connor Robertson (7-2) got the win by firing three innings of scoreless relief.
Springfield's Cory Doyne (1-6) took the loss, allowing three runs while recording just one out in the 11th inning.
Springfield falls to ten games back of Wichita in the North Division, now with a second-half record of 21-31. The Cards will send Eric Haberer (3-1) to the mound on Wednesday, against Midland's David Bradley (6-10). Wednesday is the final game of the home stand, as only five more home games remain at Hammons Field in 2006. On Wednesday night, 2,500 fans will receive a coupon for a free shake at Hardee's! Gates open at 6:10pm and game time is 7:10pm. Tickets are available for the last five home games of the regular season by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
