Drillers top Hooks, 5-3
August 15, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers struck early Tuesday night, scoring in four of the first five innings, to post a 5-3 win over the Corpus Christi Hooks. The victory was the sixth in the past seven games for the Drillers and kept them five games behind first-place Wichita in the North Division standings of the Texas League.
Starting pitcher Marc Kaiser took advantage of the early offense to post his ninth victory of the season. He is now tied with Juan Morillo and Ubaldo Jimenez for the most wins on the Tulsa staff this season.
The Drillers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Tuesday as Troy Tulowitzki singled to begin the game and eventually scored on an error.
Another unearned run in the second inning made it 2-0. Matt Miller reached on an error to start the second and later scored on a base hit by Tulowitzki.
The Hooks tied the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI singles by Wade Robinson and Josh Anderson.
Tulsa retook the lead in the fourth inning when Christian Colonel led off with his 7th home run of the season, but the Hooks answered in the bottom half of the inning when Robinson hit his 1st homer of the year.
The Drillers finally took the lead for good in the fifth inning when consecutive singles by Joe Gaetti and Ian Stewart put runners at the corners. Joe Koshansky followed with a sacrifice fly to put Tulsa in front 4-3. For Koshansky, it was his 101st run batted in of the year. He needs only four more RBI to tie Carlos Pena's team record of 105.
Tulsa closed the scoring in the eighth inning as Koshansky doubled and scored on a base hit by Miller.
Kaiser worked 6 2/3 innings before turning things over to the Drillers bullpen. Josh Newman allowed a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings, and Jim Miller set the side down in order in the bottom of the ninth to record his 8th save of the year.
The Drillers have now won 10 of the 12 meetings with the Hooks this year.
The two teams will continue their series Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. Steven Register will make the start for Tulsa with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05PM.
