New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The top two hitters in the Quebec Capitales lineup, shortstop Ivan Naccarata and second baseman Josh Colafemina, combined to go 8-for-10 with five runs scored as the Capitales defeated the New Jersey Jackals 8-2 on Wednesday afternoon to stave off a sweep at Yogi Berra Stadium. Despite their loss, the Jackals managed to take two of three from Quebec in the series.
Both starters, New Jersey's Ryan Lobban and Quebec's Michel Simard, pitched well as the contest went scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Jackals manufactured a run to open the scoring. With one out, left fielder Jacob Butler walked and advanced to third on a Simard wild pitch and a deep fly ball off the bat of second baseman Travis Jones. The next batter, rookie catcher Dean Forthun, plated Butler with a well-executed safety squeeze to give the Jackals a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the sixth though, Quebec pushed a pair of runs across to gain a 2-1 lead after back-to-back triples by Naccarata and Colafemina to begin the inning and an RBI groundout by center fielder Sebastian Boucher.
New Jersey evened the score an inning later thanks to a trio of quality at-bats. With one out, left fielder Jacob Butler worked the count full before drawing a free pass. Two batters later, Forthun fouled off five pitches with a full count before walking in a 12-pitch at-bat. Then after Kevin Clark fouled off a pair of two-strike pitches, he blooped an RBI single into left center to make it a 2-2 game.
The Capitales tacked on a run in the top of the eighth on a Colafemina one-out double and an RBI single by right fielder Pete LaForest before they erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. In the final frame, Quebec tagged a pair of New Jersey relievers for five hits, including a two-run triple by Boucher and a run-scoring double that bounced over the left field wall by LaForest.
Quebec reliever Giuseppe Granitto (2-1) recorded the final out in the seventh after replacing Simard to earn the win while New Jersey's Edgar Estanga (2-6) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth. In his only appearances of the series, Capitales closer Andrew Albers notched his 12th save of the season, a two-inning outing. Jackals reliever Edward Rodriguez contributed a scoreless seventh inning.
Lobban turned in his team-leading seventh quality start of the season but did not factor in the decision after allowing just two runs on six hits in six innings. Offensively for New Jersey, third baseman Abraham Nunez singled in his final at-bat in the eighth inning to reach base for the 29thconsecutive game.
The Jackals (11-12 second half, 30-39 overall) continue their seven-game homestand when they begin a four-game weekend series against the Worcester Tornadoes on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey will send left-hander Justin Jones (0-0, 3.00) to the mound for his second start with the Jackals against Worcester right-hander Justin Knoff (2-1, 3.27). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
