Saginaw Spirit News Release
Windsor, Ontario - After coming off a tough 6-2 home loss to Sarnia last weekend, the Saginaw Spirit were unable to maintain their offensive rhythm found in the early going Thursday at the WFCU Centre, allowing four consecutive goals for a 7-4 defeat to the Windsor Spitfires.
Their first loss away from the Dow Event Center this season, the Spirit caught fire in the 65 seconds following the opening puck drop, with Albert Michnac and Nicholas Porco leading way for a quick 2-0 advantage.
Michnac extended his goal streak to three games which is good for fifth place among all OHL players this year. The 19-year-old's six points lead the Spirit and is fifth overall in the league. Porco is tied with Cole Perfetti for two total goals through three games.
Michnac, who was traded from the Mississauga Steelheads back in June, also recorded an assist off a Cole Coskey go-ahead goal with 34 seconds remaining in the first which made it 4-3 in favor of the Spirit.
Coskey's score came less than two minutes following a poke through effort from Jake Goldowski for his first goal for the season and two points total. Saginaw finished with double-digit shots on goal and successfully killed the lone power play opportunity for Windsor at the midway point.
Cameron Lamour made his third consecutive start in goal after making 23 saves in the decisive home opening win over the Soo Greyhounds last week and splitting time with Ivan Prosvetov against Sarnia. His outing ended in 23:16 minutes of play after stopping 3-of-7 shots.
Lamour was pulled in favor of Tristan Lennox, who made his OHL regular-season debut after being the first goaltender taken in the 2018 Priority Selection Draft (26th overall). The 15-year-old from Cambridge, Ontario finished with 12 saves.
Windsor saw three different players score in the first period as Jordan Frasca cut the Spirit lead in half at the 18:15 mark. Jean-Luc Foudy, seven minutes after grabbing his first-of-three assists from a Grayson Ladd game-tying goal, made it 3-3 for this third point of the season.
The Spitfires would score the only goal in the second period from Connor Corcoran, but were unable to capitalize on four different power play situations. Saginaw was down two men once Porco was called for goaltender interference with 6:06 left.
The collision between Porco and Spitfire's Michael DiPietro resulted in the latter being pulled for Kari Piiroinen to start the third period. Before the three-minute mark, Luke Boka earned the game-winning goal for Windsor with 17:27 remaining; the first time up to that point the home team had the lead.
Windsor scored their first power play goal from Nathan Staios just 10 seconds after Riley Webb was called for cross checking, the first-of-two insurance goals, before Tyler Angle made it a three-score difference with 6:48 left.
Blade Jenkins would cut the lead to two once the final minute commenced for the Spirit's third power play goal of the season, winning 29-of-57 face-offs and finishing with 36 shots on goal.
