Mexico City's Fourth Quarter Comeback Stifles the Herd

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Mexico City Capitanes 102-100.

Stevie Thompson Jr. led the Herd with 24 points while Drew Timme followed with 14 points. Wenyen Gabriel added a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds as well as Kihei Clark with 12 points and 12 assists.

Mexico City's top scorer was Ethan Thompson with 30 points while Maozinha Pereira added 19 points.

The Capitanes got out to a fast lead scoring the first six points and pushing ahead to a 10-5 advantage in the first four minutes. The Herd answered tying the game, but Mexico City pushed ahead again with eight straight points. The Herd countered with seven consecutive points to make it a one-point game with three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Capitanes outscored the Herd 9-4 during the next two minutes but a last-minute layup by Stevie Thompson put the Herd within four (27-23) at the break.

Drew Timme converted a layup to open the second quarter. The Wisconsin deficit fluctuated between five and two points until a three-point shot by Alex Antetokounmpo tied the game 49-49 with less than three minutes remaining. Mexico City did not give up, hitting the next five points. Stevie Thompson Jr. and Marques Bolden teamed up for eight points to make it a one-point game (58-57) at the half. Stevie Thompson Jr. guided the Herd with 12 points.

Wisconsin converted on the first basket of the third quarter giving them a one-point edge. Mexico City was quick to respond with a dunk, but the Herd stole the advantage back almost instantly. The teams traded the lead twice before Wisconsin hit a vital 7-0 run giving them a six-point head start. The Capitanes hit one basket before the Herd scored eight unanswered points to go ahead by double-digits. Each team hit two baskets each to close out the third quarter. The Herd led 80-68.

Mexico City opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to bring the Herd's lead to four points. The teams traded baskets until Drew Timme converted on back-to-back baskets to keep the Herd ahead. The Capitanes responded with a deadly 16-2 run to take the advantage for the first time in the fourth quarter. Elijah Hughes hit from beyond the arc, but the Capitanes scored again to go up by four points with 14 seconds left. Stevie Thompson Jr. swished a crucial three-pointer to make it a one-point game with less than 10 seconds remaining. Mexico City clutched two free throws before Kihei Clark got sent to the line. Clark converted on one free throw, but Capitanes secured the rebound on the second and held on to win 102-100.

The Herd will face the Mexico City Capitanes for the second game of the back-to-back series tomorrow, Jan. 13 with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
