St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals for the second time in three days with a 7-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park.
Mets starter Layonel Ovalles twirled a gem, allowing just two runs over 5.1 excellent innings. Ovalles was touched for an infield hit from the first batter of the game but recovered to retire the next 14 batters in a row. Ovalles pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the fifth by striking out Trey Paige to maintain a 5-0 lead.
The Mets offense produced 11 hits, including four for extra bases. Diego Mosquera started the scoring by lacing a RBI double to left-center field in the second inning off Chen-Wei Lin that plated Jose Hernandez.
Karell Paz ripped a RBI single against Augusto Calderon in the third inning for a 2-0 lead.
The Mets opened the game up against Calderon with a three-run fourth inning. Jefrey De Los Santos scorched a two-run triple to build a 4-0 advantage. Carlos Dominguez singled home De Los Santos later in the frame to make it 5-0.
Zach Levenson hit a two-run homer off Ovalles with one out in the sixth inning that ended Ovalles' day. Reliever Ramon Henriquez came in and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings.
Wilfredo Lara hit his team-high 12th homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2.
Dariel Gomez, the younger brother of Mets manager Gilbert Gomez, led off the eighth inning with a towering home run to right field for a 7-2 lead. Gomez (hamstring) has three hits and three walks in two minor league rehab games with St. Lucie.
Joe Joe Rodriguez pitched out of trouble in the top of the ninth by getting a broken bat ground out from Dakota Harris to end the game.
All nine Mets hitters in the lineup recorded a hit. Kevin Villavicencio singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
The Mets (37-70, 13-29) are off on Monday. They continue their home stand on Tuesday when they open a six-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. First pitch at Clover Park on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
