St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - An impressive comeback by the St. Lucie Mets fell just short on Wednesday in a 7-5 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads at Clover Park.
The Mets trailed 7-0 with two outs in the ninth inning but scored five times and brought the tying run to the plate. The rally was started by base runner Wilfredo Lara, who beat out a routine fielder's choice at second base with two outs on a tardy throw by shortstop Javier Sanoja.
Jupiter changed pitchers, swapping out Nic Enright and bringing in Henry Valencio. Valencio threw a wild pitch to allow a run then walked a pair to load the bases. Yeral Martinez crushed a three-run double to cut the deficit to 7-4. Adrian Hernandez followed with a bloop RBI single to make it 7-5.
Josh White replaced Valencio and faced the tying run at the plate in Jett Williams. White struck out Williams on a razor close pitch on the outside corner to end the game.
The Hammerheads jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Torin Montgomery hit a two-run single off Mets starter Christian Scott.
The game remained 2-0 until Jupiter collected four straight hits with two outs in the sixth and scored three runs against Jawilme Ramirez. Chase Luttrell hit a RBI double and Jordan McCants hit a run-scoring single in the inning.
Jupiter scored twice in the top of the ninth on a RBI triple by Sanoja and an error that made it 7-0.
The Mets offense was held in check most of the night by Jupiter starter Cade Gibson, who got the win. Gibson fired 6.0 scoreless inning and gave up just two hits, both in the first inning. Gibson retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced.
Enright pitched the next 2.2 innings until he departed for Valencio.
Scott pitched two inning for the Mets on MiLB rehab assignment and suffered the loss. After a perfect first inning he allowed four hits and two runs in the second inning.
Abraham Almonte, also on MiLB rehab assignment, went 2 for 2 with a double, single and walk.
The Mets (5-18) and Hammerheads (14-9) meet again on Thursday for Star Wars Night at Clover Park. The night will feature a celebrity appearance by Spencer Wilding, who played Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Characters from the 501st Legion will also be in attendance. The Mets will wear special Mandalorian/Grogu jersey that fans can bid on at stluciemets.com/auction.
Thursday is also Dollar Night with $1 Bud Light drafts at the concession stands, $2 Bud and Bud Light aluminum bottles, $2 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 popcorn.
