Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets pounded out eight runs on 11 hits to knock off the Fort Myers Miracle, 8-3, at Hammond Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Mets built an early two-run lead in the first two innings. In the first, Champ Stuart led off with a double down the third base line. Luis Guillorme put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Stuart to third. With Ahmed Rosario at the plate, Miracle starter Keaton Steel delivered a first pitch ball. Catcher Alex Swim's throw back to the mound sailed into center field and Stuart scored easily on the error.
In the second, Steele (1-3) walked John Mora to start the inning. Tomas Nido singled through the left side, then Jhoan Urena hit into a force play at second base to put runners on the corners. Stuart rolled out to second base to bring in Mora and put St. Lucie up 2-0.
The Miracle sliced a run off the Mets' lead in the third. Logan Wade reached on an infield single and moved to second when Max Murphy bounced a base hit up the middle. Austin Diemer's fly out to right advanced Wade to third base. Sean Miller then registered his first hit and first RBI with the Miracle on a single through the right side to cut the St. Lucie edge to 2-1.
Steele struggled over the next three frames on the mound and the Miracle committed four errors behind him in the game. In the fourth, the Mets put up three runs with a pair of sacrifice flies from Nido and Guillerme as well as an RBI hit from Rosario. Mora doubled in a pair in the fifth and Kevin Taylor picked up an RBI hit in the sixth.
Wade got a couple of runs back for the Miracle in the sixth with a two-out, two-run double into left center field off Mets starter Corey Oswalt. Exiting the game after 5.2 innings, Oswalt (2-1) earned the win after surrendering three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Steele was charged with seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with four walk and three strikeouts. The Miracle issued a season-high nine walks.
Fort Myers (16-12) remains in first place by a 0.5 game and play the second game of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Mets (15-12). Felix Jorge (1-2) is expected to start for the Miracle against former Florida Gulf Coast University pitcher Ricky Knapp (3-1).
The Miracle will be wearing special Bad News Bears-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the move, Gary Lee Cavagnaro, who played the original Engelberg, will be at Hammond Stadium to sign autographs, pose for pictures and greet fans.
